Arboretum Cherry Blossoms: Pastel Study
Lighting is so funny and beautiful. Molly and I went to see the cherry blossoms in the evening this week, while they were in bloom at the Arboretum. The sun disappeared while we were parking but then popped out for just a few minutes and I ran around taking pictures like a fiend and trying to keep an eye on Molly. The light made the shadows form the trees so dark and lit up the grass in an almost neon green. All the pale pink blossoms went a kind of pinkish/red/orange/brown.
Molly was also thrilled because another little girl had a kite and let her give it a try. Her first time flying a kite!
I’m hoping to paint “en plein air” soon… Jason ordered me the equipment and I am trying to arrange some other items, like maybe a camp stool to sit on? I’m just so excited although I passionately hate having people watch me paint, so there’s that to overcome. Haha! If all else fails I guess I can make more of these pastel and gouache sketches. They are actually quite fun but very messy, I end up absolutely covered in smudged pastel and fixative and dust.
My sister and maybe my friend Ilana both offered to come paint with me (and mostly chat probably! haha!) AND I found a group of plein air painters in Hamilton and joined it so hopefully I get some good tips if I go out with them! Have any of you tried drawing outside? Anything I absolutely need to know?
