Secret Reading

I love reading. A lot. I read my first book when I was in grade one and I was unstoppable from that point. When we would go to the library in grade school, my mom would limit me to 16 books a visit. I would always zip through them long before the due date. I worked through most of our local library. Mysteries, Science Fiction, Fantasy, Popular Novels, Teen Romances, Kids paperbacks -- I loved them all.

As I grew up, I was painfully shy. (I know. It's hard to believe if you've met me in person. But I write the truth.) I stopped trying to share stories I was reading with people, especially since most of the other kids in my classes weren't reading Star Wars or Agatha Christie or Madeleine L'Engle. They were reading Goosebumps and Archie Comics.

The more time passed, the less I talked about reading.

Then, one day in university we were asked to make a video and I decided to make mine about reading. In secret. I wanted to tell people that I read. And I wanted to make it okay for other people to say that they read.

Reading is sexy, dammit!

I can still remember showing it to the class and my friend Adam being completely flabbergasted that I read as much as I do.

"You can read a book a day? And you actually DO read a book a day? While going through university? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? I'VE NEVER SEEN YOU READING!!!"

He was so stunned that he would bring it up every time we were out together. Nearby tables, bar staff, people outside smoking, friends that I had just met -- they all heard about my secret reading habits. Even though they were obviously no longer a secret.

So... I invite you to share it if you love to read. I am also looking for recommendations. Help a book lover out!
