Homegrown Hamilton is an adorable, way-larger-than-it-looks-on-the-inside, Celiac friendly restaurant/bar/brunch place in Hamilton. I was dead sure that there was nowhere to brunch in this city when we moved here and I got diagnosed as Celiac at the same time. My lifelong friend (and Hamilton local!) Jennie buckled down and found Homegrown Hamilton, and it was absolutely delicious and -- most importantly -- safe!
Safe. Safe. Safe.
My new fear when arriving at a restaurant:
Me: I have Celiac. Staff Member: Celia? You are waiting for one more? Me: Celiac. Disease. It says online your menu has gluten free options? Staff member: Whaaaaa?
And then I either leave or have a major internal psychotic meltdown or Jay steps in.
At Homegrown Hamilton, they were prepared for me before I even stepped in the door, and they rushed to assure me that I could adapt almost any item on the brunch menu to my needs, they have gluten free toast AND almond milk! They also immediately set my heart at ease by volunteering (I LOVE THAT) that they were putting parchment paper down in the toaster so my toast wasn't contaminated, that they wore gloves and kept everything separate and that they were still nervous they hadn't done enough. That kind of paranoia in kitchen staff is a Celiac's dream come true.
I've only managed to eat there a couple times so far, but I know that it's going to be a staple for us. Especially since I didn't get glutened, and I felt like such a 'real' person ordering toast! In a restaurant!
So if anyone wants to have brunch and try this place out, I am there. Like, really, I am probably already there...
