Sister Brunch: Work in Progress

This painting was an unexpected test of my perseverance and commitment. Ha! I guess the better you know someone’s face, the harder it is to detach yourself and paint what you see. And in the end, I didn’t. I made some choices where I decided my version looked more like Brenna than the actual photo of Brenna and I have no regrets!

Rousseau Aerial Photo Shadow Box

Welcome to this super fun and lighthearted and messy photo box idea I had! Oliver from O’s Clothes was gifted 35 black and white photographic prints which he sent out to 35 local Hamilton artists for them to interpret and change how they will, and when we are all done he will sell them for charity. I immediately envisioned something colourful and playground-like, because I drive through this area often (it is much more developed than in the original photo!) and we always pass this one elementary school with a big prominent playground visible from the road.

It's Ranunculus Season!

There is only one ranunculus in this bouquet, the orange flower to the left of the central purplish rose. Ranunculus are up there with tulips and crocus and daffodils as the flowers that exude spring to me. I want spring so bad I can almost taste it (except I can’t, and am still really feeling the effects of a long winter). If you stop in at your favourite local florist I bet they have a few ranunculus just waiting for you!

Oil Sketch of James

Real life James is 11 months old now! He is such a sweetie. He crawls and stands and is sort of cruising on the furniture (like holding the furniture and walking carefully around it) but he won’t really walk if you hold his hands, he just sits down. He is super into taking things out of containers. It’s his favourite!

Messy Perfectionism

I bought chalk pastels months ago after seeing some “Pastel Paintings” online. I tried once and it was a disaster, like a toddler drew it! Ha! I mean, really truly bad. I threw it straight in the garbage. But then I pulled them out this week…

Grocery Store Plants Are My Secret Favourite?

I bought a pot of these huge yellow mums at the grocery store the other day. When Molly was about one and a half I guess she and Jason went to the grocery store and he said offhand “I guess we should buy some flowers for mummy!” and then for about half a year she would say that exact phrase every time we went in the store. And now even though she is four and hates the grocery store, every time I walk in and see the flowers I think “We should buy some flowers for mummy! Yep. And we will. Bahaha!” (Sometimes I say that all out loud including the evil laugh and people give me side eye).

Botanical Sketchbook: Milkweed (Asclepias syriaca)

This milkweed grows in our front yard, by our driveway in the summer. I always look for monarch butterfly cocoons but I haven’t seen one yet! Maybe I need more milkweed plants? I wish it would spread but that whole area is surrounded by hostile and rapidly spreading ground elder that I will one day deal with when I don’t have small children (HA)

One Rose Four Times

Here is my issue with sketchbooks: I WANT THEM TO BE PERFECT. One imperfect page and I am ready to light that thing in a bonfire. I don’t know why that is the case, because if I make an error knitting, I usually just move on and don’t even rip back and fix it?
