I had a dream the other day that instead of being a watercolour painter who painted house exteriors, I was a gouache painter and I painted really bright and patterned living rooms. When I woke up I felt this shiver of motivation and then for two days I kept thinking about those cute living rooms full of colour and pattern and then I went and bought gouache paints and this happened!
Gouache is kind of like opaque watercolour. It mixes with water and you use similar brushes but instead of leaving the paper as the white part, you can add white later. Also I am finding the colours much brighter and more vibrant. The part I am struggling with is the order of laying paint down and how it behaves. I am so used to layering many watercolour layers one after another but the second you touch water (or another layer of wet paint) to the gouache it reactivates the previous layer and everything starts sliding around! Gah! But fun!
Another challenge that I brought totally on myself is that I made this first painting TINY. Ha! The paper is 6 inches square and I thought this was just an exercise but now I am very attached to this tiny painting and want to keep it!
Has anyone else tried gouache? Are you liking the way this is going? Should I stick to watercolours?
