Updated 2014: Where to Eat Gluten Free in Hamilton, ON

Eating Gluten Free (especially if you have Celiac Disease contamination issues) is never easy. I have lived in Hamilton for a couple years now, and although I don't know ALL the places, here are some local restaurants where you should be able to eat safely. This list has been updated from last years blog post, with new restaurants I have tried and some recommendations from people who have emailed me. Thanks for all your suggestions!

Anniversary: Niagara-on-the-Lake

We celebrated our 4th year of being together this weekend by going to Niagara-on-the-Lake (courtesy of an awesome wedding gift from our good friends - thank you guys!). I hadn't been to Niagara-on-the-Lake since I was a small kid and my aunt lived there. It's so cute! We stayed at the Pillar and Post, and ate a super delicious (perfectly gluten free!) dinner at The Cannery, which is a restaurant in the hotel.

Where to Eat Gluten Free in Hamilton, ON

Eating gluten free in Hamilton was a challenge for me, especially moving here as a newly diagnosed Celiac. There are a TON of great restaurants in the city, but it seemed like every one of them was fraught with contamination danger issues, and we mostly ate at home, with some stressful and sometimes disastrous forays into the world of eating out.

I've lived here a year, now, and although I'm definitely not the most qualified to be writing this list, I would have been thrilled to find a blog post like this when I moved here. Hopefully this will help some of you fellow Hamiltonians and gluten free visitors to eat safely!  I will save gluten free bakeries and grocery shopping for future posts.

Gluten Free Ginger Molasses Cookie Recipe

This is my Grandma Dorothy's recipe for Ginger Sparkles, made over by my mom to be gluten free. This is a kind of thick, soft cookie with tons of molasses flavour. You can easily make this back into a gluten-filled cookie by using wheat flour instead of brown rice flour. I honestly can't tell the difference between the gluten and not gluten versions, and I've been eating these my whole life.

Portobello Mushroom & Bacon Risotto Recipe

This mushroom & bacon risotto is a staple in our house. Probably not a good thing, considering the quantities of bacon, cheese, butter, and olive oil. Although I didn't grow up with risotto, it's now a favourite comfort food. Cheesy rice! With bacon! This recipe is naturally gluten free, but to be sure it's gluten free, make sure all the ingredients you use are gluten free (bacon and chicken soup stock are sometimes gluten filled culprits).

Velma's Gluten Free Shortbread Cookies

These cookies are everything I ever wanted in a shortbread cookie, including my entire life pre-Celiac disease. You can tell just from eating a spoonful of dough what's coming and it's nothing but super buttery perfection. I know I'm not alone because when my mom made them, she called me right away and told me they were also the shortbread cookie SHE had been waiting for her whole life!

Sans Gluten: Homegrown Hamilton

Homegrown Hamilton is an adorable, way-larger-than-it-looks-on-the-inside, Celiac friendly restaurant/bar/brunch place in Hamilton. I was dead sure that there was nowhere to brunch in this city when we moved here and I got diagnosed as Celiac at the same time. My lifelong friend (and Hamilton local!) Jennie buckled down and found Homegrown Hamilton, and it was absolutely delicious and -- most importantly -- safe!
